Welcome to our Unplugged Village®

Since 2009, hundreds of thousands of Global (formerly National) Day of Unplugging participants have joined the movement to elevate human connection over digital engagement in their cities across the globe.

Staten Island is a vibrant city known for its green park spaces, museums and rich history. There are numerous natural spaces here which make it ideal for unplugged community gathering. Heather Butts has been leading the effort through her work with a variety of local organizations including the Health4Youth program and Columbia University. Together with some of her students from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health they are bringing unplugging to the Staten Island community! Efforts include the Bay Street and Beyond Program, holding kid building Home Depot workshops, installation of over 70 Little Free Libraries, the Skyline Community Garden program and many more!

Unplugged Activity: We are a senior center program, serving members of the community. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, and the safety of our members we will only be offering the event to our senior members at this time.

Our senior members will be decorating Smartphone Nap-Sacks to give as gifts.

Unplugged Activity: I coordinate a variety of activities that encourage people to unplug and get out into the Staten Island community. We support several food pantries, set up and maintain community gardens and Little Free Libraries (LFL) and have sports and other activities for youth. For National Day of Unplugging 2021 we held an LFL Scavenger hunt with some fun activities in the park. Our focus is keeping youth engaged with their hands and minds all the while supporting and giving back to our great community!
