What is the Annual GDU?

At the heart of our movement is the Annual Global Day of Unplugging, a 24-hour digital break held every first weekend in March. Schools, businesses, and individuals around the world plan tech-free gatherings in the days leading up to and following the big day to maximize its impact! Whether it’s just one hour or the full 24-hours, people everywhere unplug from their screens to dive into offline activities, real-life conversations, in-person connections, and meaningful moments.

We’re more than just a day, we offer year-round tools, programs, and resources to help people make unplugging a personal, flexible, and lasting practice. The best way to get started on your unplugging journey is to participate in the Annual Global Day of Unplugging.

The next Annual GDU will take place on…

The Leaders of GDU 2026

Brought to you by our Super Gatherers

Super Gatherers are experienced and consistent gatherers. Whether they’ve hosted Annual GDU gatherings multiple years in a row, have experience with large-scale gatherings, or host weekly or monthly unplugged gatherings — these Gatherers are constant sources of inspiration for us and our GDU community.

How to make your Unplugged Gatherings meaningful…

    • Why is this important to you?

    • Why does your community need a break from tech?

    • Reflect on why your community needs some unplugging and IRL connection.

  • Design a gathering that feels authentic to your people.

    • What makes your community unique?

    • What might make unplugging feel challenging?

    • Consider the local vibe. Is unplugging encouraged? Is it taboo?

Shape the tone and style of your gathering with these things in mind.

    • Once the idea clicks, commit to it!

    • Clear vision & purpose = smoother planning.

  • Submit your gathering to the Unplugged Movement Map so others can find and join you.

  • We’re a small team so please give us time to ship to you!

Don’t wait until the last minute!

    • This gathering is for you as much as it is for others.

    • Take a moment to be present amongst the noise.

  • After your gathering, fill out the Gatherer Wrap-Up form and share the Gatherling (guest) Wrap-Up form to your guests.

It helps us track impact for our funders, and the growth of the Unplugged Movement, tell your story — and keep GDU funded.
