Create a Boredom Box

One of our favorite dads that loves to inspire parents to unplug with their kids is Scott Houghton. He introduced the idea of a Boredom Box to us and we wanted to share it with you all. It is a simple box filled with little slips of paper, just like this one his 4-year-old showed him (below), with screen-free ideas to do when you are bored.

Even when life gets a little crazy for Scott, he says that this was one idea that had really stuck and was meaningful.

Roughly two to three times per week, his 4-year-old walks up to him and hands him a slip of paper with a screen-free activity on it for them to do together. Sometimes it is quick and easy. Sometimes it turns into a bigger moment. You can read more on our blog about how he does this activity and check out his Substack the Screen Free Dad.

HOW TO DO IT:

Set up a creative space with whatever materials you have and then let kids take the lead, with the decorating. It will mean more to them if they get to help design and decorate it.

SOME SUPPLIES YOU MIGHT WANT:

  • a box

  • crayons/markers

  • cardboard
